THERE’S NOTHING LIKE A DANE

29 October 2009

Model-3107-009

Can a chair change the course of the universe?  Arne Jacobsen’s Model 3107 chair–light, durable, timeless and gracefully curvaceous–did, according to London’s Design Museum. It’s one of many 20th century classics (circa 1955) included  in the recently released book, 50 Chairs That Changed the World.  I dare not speak for the world, but just try getting me to live without my six 3107′s in sleek and sexy red.

My sorrow, when she’s here with me
Thinks these dark days of autumn rain
Are beautiful as days can be
She loves the bare, the withered tree
She walks the sodden pasture lane.

These screen shots featuring neon at its most bewitching, from the site of the British design firm Venture Three, are but a few of the many photographic gems to be found there.

Just when you thought you’d seen everything that could be done with a photograph, along comes Abigail Reynolds, who takes existing photographs and cuts and folds them into these lovely textured reliefs.

FINGER TIPS

imm_living_tap_for_tea

This is definitely not your grandmother’s flowery porcelain tea cup. Invoking an ancient Chinese fable about tapping the saucer three times as a gesture of thanks to the server, this cup and saucer with gold fingerprints–meant to be a reminder to express gratitude to one’s host–is certainly a conversation piece from IMM Living.

Knoll’s latest furniture collaboration is with the Italian designer, Cini Boeri.  I’m more impressed with this lozenge-like presentation of the collection’s candy-colored ottomans.

Oh, so cheeky.  The Ultimate Uncluttered London Tube Map. Now, if only someone would simplify New York’s subway map just so.
