In 2001, the German postal service printed 14 million stamps bearing the indelible visage of Audrey Hepburn–without having been granted copyright permission to use the image. When permission was denied by Hepburn’s children, the stamps were ordered destroyed. This past Saturday, a rare surviving sheet of 10 stamps sold in Berlin for $606,000, the proceeds of which will go to Hepburn’s charitable causes.
