A rare, stark artifact from the Civil Rights Movement, this was the poster carried by striking Memphis sanitation workers in April 1968, in a march attended by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (only days away from his assassination). The origin of the slogan is said to be the Declaration of Independence: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.” The poster was auctioned by Swann Galleries for $32,000 earlier this year.
